EMDR Intensives

EMDR Intensives are a form of therapy that helps clients feel better faster. Intensives include extended length therapy sessions, rather than weekly 1-hour sessions, to allow for deeper processing and faster relief.

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy treatment designed to alleviate the distress associated with disturbing or traumatic memories.

During EMDR therapy, clients attend to emotionally disturbing thoughts, feelings, or memories for brief periods of time while also focusing on an external stimulus (typically lateral eye movements, hand-tapping, or handheld vibrating “buzzies”.) Over the course of time, new associations are developed with the traumatic memory, resulting in the reduction of emotional distress and the development of more helpful beliefs.

  • Hourly sessions don’t work for everyone. An intensive format may be more effective for people experiencing neurodivergence, chronic illness, transportation barriers, or work/life demands that make it difficult to carve out an hour every week. Intensives are also a great fit for anyone struggling with the effects of trauma and wanting to experience faster symptom relief.

  • Intensive sessions are where we do the hard work.

By the time your intensive session starts, we will have already met for the planning session to identify your specific goals for the intensive, and you will have completed the workbook provided to you, allowing us to engage in a deeper level of processing. During the intensive, we will engage in EMDR desensitization and reprocessing, accompanied by grounding and mindfulness strategies throughout. We will take time to reflect, discuss new insights, and debrief around the processing work. Many clients find it helpful to take a walk in the middle or at the end of the intensive session (with or without your therapist). We can take breaks any time.

    And of course, snacks.

  • EMDR intensives are self-pay.

  • Intensives can be done in a virtual format if that feels safe and comfortable for you as the client. We will discuss and assess this together during the initial consultation phone call.

Many clients find it beneficial to come to the office because it allows for more intentional focus and fewer distractions. The office is equipped with specific EMDR tools, such as the light bar/buzzies, as well as numerous grounding resources that can be essential to support the hard work you’ll do during the intensive (think weighted blanket, aromatherapy options, warm tea, fidgets, art supplies, etc.)
